January




In January, we have been learning and exploring in our pretend play doctor office! Students have been engaging in various turn taking opportunities in the doctor office as they learn more about what our bodies need as living things. In science, we have been learning about the basic needs of animals, plants, and people. In math students continued to work on counting and number recognition. We worked on comparing two groups to distinguish between groups that are more, less, or equal. In ELA, we read books about using our senses to further explore and understand our environments. Students worked on identifying key details in our books and recognizing print features throughout the books. We continued practicing letter identification as we worked on sounding out and building CVC words from the word families -op, -eg, -ap, and -an. Students continued learning new sight words and reviewing previously taught words from our red and pink lists. In Letterland we visited Mr. U (U), Uppy Umbrella (U), Kicking King (K), Lucy Lamplight (L), and Firefighter Fred (F). We learned about Martin Luther King Jr. and made "I have a dream..." clouds. Students kept on loving our specials - especially music and a visit from our Frankie Friends! Next month, we are looking forward to celebrating Valentine's Day together and taking a trip to Flour Power for our Family School Partnership Day!

  Our kindergarten and 1st graders have been hard at work learning our classroom routines and rules this month! In social studies we talked a lot about rules, expectations, and reviewed emergency drills. In literacy, we have been learning our letters and sight words, as well as beginning to learn about word families. We have practiced attending to books read aloud in small groups; we read stories from our curriculum titled "We Work Together" and "What Should We Do?". In math, we worked on identifying basic shapes and categorizing data - involving size, color, object and shape. In writing, we are working on stating our opinions and coloring pictures that relate to what we write about. We have had a blast exploring our classroom centers, including our pretend play lemonade stand.   In the month of February, students learned about non-living and living things through our zoo pretend play center. In science we compared and learned about the needs of plants, animals, and people. In ELA, students practiced identifying key points in stories, comparing familiar texts, and identifying a text as telling a story as we read "Where Is My Baby?" and "At the Petting Zoo". Our sight words this month were here, said, up, and we. We practiced segmenting and blending sounds in words with CVC words. In writing, students practiced writing about simple facts, such as, what color Bogie the dog is and how it feels cold in the winter. In math, students continued to work on number identification and counting as they began composing and decomposing. We composed and decomposed sets of 5 and 10 through singing 5 Little Monkeys, 5 Green Frogs, and reading The Hungry Frog while using number bonds.
